To celebrate the 25th anniversary as a UNESCO World Heritage site, we organize a delightful Craftsmen's Day on Saturday, August 26, 2023. This event offers visitors a unique opportunity to take a step back in time and experience the traditional crafts of Kinderdijk themselves. It promises to be a day filled with cultural heritage and authentic activities.
On this special day, visitors can admire various artisanal activities at different locations spread throughout the World Heritage site of Kinderdijk. These crafts have played a significant role in the history of Kinderdijk. Throughout the day, several artisans will be present to demonstrate the intricacies of their craft, inspiring visitors with their skills. From baking bread in the traditional bakehouse to crafting sails and tanning rope, there will be a variety of crafts to witness. And, of course, we must not forget the most important craft of Kinderdijk: miller’s craftsmanship. All these ancient crafts offer a glimpse into the rich history of the area.
Museum Mill Overwaard will also be open to the public for a one-time opportunity. Visitors will have the chance to explore the unique interior of this mill. Additionally, there will be a skilled millwright working on the premises, sharing his knowledge and expertise with the public while demonstrating the repair of a “baard” from a Kinderdijk windmill. The “baard” is a colorful wooden board on the front of the mill cap, displaying the year the mill was built.
Furthermore, an experienced rope splicer will be present, challenging everyone to elevate their knot-tying skills to a higher level!
The Craftsmen’s Day on Saturday, August 26, 2023, promises to be an unforgettable experience for both young and old. Tickets for a day at UNESCO World Heritage Kinderdijk are easily available for purchase online.
