27 years of UNESCO World Heritage

Free entry

On December 6, 1997, the Kinderdijk-Elshout mill complex was officially designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To celebrate this special milestone again this year, we invite you to our World Heritage site!

Since our 25th anniversary, we have been celebrating our UNESCO World Heritage status with our visitors. We’ve now reached 27 years as a World Heritage Site, and we’d love to share it with everyone. That’s why we invite you for a day filled with history, culture, and fun. The best part? It’s completely free!

What can I do?

Immerse yourself in a world of water, wind, and determination. For over 700 years, the dikes, mills, and pumping stations of Kinderdijk have kept the land dry. Step on board our tour boat and be guided through this historical landscape. Enter the museum mills and discover the personal stories of the millers who breathe life into this beautiful place.

You are welcome between 10.30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Read here all the possibilities to travel to Kinderdijk in style.

Do you need a ticket?

That’s right! This is the only day of the year when all our visitor locations are freely accessible without a ticket. However, you’re more than welcome to make a donation via our website, or support our World Heritage site by taking home a souvenir or enjoying a nice cup of coffee at the Kinderdijk café. By doing so, you help preserve this unique part of the Netherlands. Thank you in advance!
